Hopefully this is limited to the shutdown-related paycheck woes and not a permanent addition.

Is it even legal for federal employees to accept tips?
Edit: googles it. They cannot.
Edit2: apparently some federal employees can in fact accept tips.
Edit3: Sorry for the roller coaster. They cannot.
3.101-2 Solicitation and acceptance of gratuities by Government personnel.
As a rule, no Government employee may solicit or accept, directly or indirectly, any gratuity, gift, favor, entertainment, loan, or anything of monetary value from anyone who (a) has or is seeking to obtain Government business with the employee’s agency, (b) conducts activities that are regulated by the employee’s agency, or (c) has interests that may be substantially affected by the performance or nonperformance of the employee’s official duties. Certain limited exceptions are authorized in agency regulations.
The TSA shouldn’t exist and neither should the Patriot Act.. Airport security should be directly funded by airports and airlines. International passengers and cargo can be screened by fed customs and border patrol.

Completely illegal. Government workers can’t get compensated for doing their jobs beyond their normal wages

Yeah, because they’ve traditionally been so cheerful and respectful of their customers, and not impatient, unqualified assholes when we can’t read their minds. Fuck outta here.

Pfft.

Under normal “working” conditions…TSA wouldn’t be allowed to have a tip/donation box on the checkpoint. But, when TSA employees are not getting paid for their work…they sure as hell can’t fire them for an unauthorized tip box.

When the government decides to hold the country hostage over budget there should be some classes of government worker who are immune to furlough, wage suspension, etc.
Air traffic controllers and TSA should be essential workers in that category.
I can sympathize with a TSA worker not getting paid who throws out a tip jar to feed their family.
Congress can get fucked for putting them in this position.
What is the point of having TSA and a police state at the airport if you don’t pay them? The potential for bribery motivation by bad actors is a problem in this situation.

I know the TSA does not have a great customer service reputation, but these people have not been paid in over a month. Imagine spending every work day dealing with people whose biggest concern is missing the flight they can still afford while hoping you actually get paid before your rent is due again. The fact that the TSA is asking for tips is insane, but I am much more annoyed at the system that demands essential workers keep showing up without giving them the essential compensation they need to survive.

TSA officers are federal employees and federal employees:
– cannot solicit tips
– cannot accept cash for performing official duties
– cannot have a “tip jar”
It’s a big nope, legally and ethically.
If someone did set one out, it would be a violation of federal ethics rules

Everyone knows the tsa is useless for the most part. They are a time wasting visual measure to give people the illusion of feeling safer but miserably fail their audits every single year without fail.
I wouldn’t trust the tsa to protect me from an actual threat any more than I’d trust Trump to be a good president.
